Teens looking at phone in car

Identifying Distracted Drivers

Have you ever been driving and noticed the car in front of you swerving or braking abruptly? You probably thought to yourself, "they are on their phone," or "whoa, they need to pay more attention" chances are you're probably right. Distracted driving is more common than you may think and involves tasks other than texting. In fact, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly eight people in the U.S. are killed daily as a result of distracted driving.

Signs of Distracted Driving

Avoiding a distracted driving-related car crash can be a lot easier when you are aware of the signs. When someone is distracted while behind the wheel, you may notice some of the following:

  • Driving or swerving between lanes
  • Stopping longer at traffic stops
  • Sudden breaking
  • Maintaining a too close following distance from the car in front of them
  • Running red lights or traffic signs
  • Inability to maintain lane position
  • Seeing their eyes looking down and not at the road
  • Driving slower than the speed limit or flow of traffic

Protecting Yourself From a Distracted Driver

When noticing a distracted driver, you can take several steps to help prevent an accident:

Practice defensive driving – this involves tactics such as checking your side and rearview mirrors, keeping a safe following distance, and driving below the speed limit if needed.

Dashcam – can help gain a visual to prove that the other driver was distracted.

Slow down or change lanes – this allows for room swerving or any abrupt braking.

Never attempt to engage the other vehicle or take matters into your own hands; this will help avoid any potential road rage if there's no way for you to safely avoid the distracted driver, safely pull over and call 911.
