Significant disparities exist in the restraint systems of passenger vehicles, making back-seat passengers, even when they are wearing seatbelts, more likely to experience injury and even death than their front-seat counterparts in the event of an automobile accident, according to a new study by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
Though safety standards for front-seat occupants have gotten better, back seat-safety has lagged behind. The back-seat passengers for the most part solely rely on a seat belt for safety. Front-seat passengers are protected by other safety equipment such as front facing airbags, specially designed seat belts, and less so, side-deploying airbags.
In addition to less safety equipment in the back seat, the other main culprit for unsafe riding is a failure to buckle up, a major cause of car accident injuries and death. Back seats, unlike the front seats, do not contain controls to balance the tension and restraint of the seat belt, making them less safe than the front-seat safety belts.
Passengers in the back seat of a passenger vehicle experience chest, head, and neck injuries from the back-seat safety restraints. Other injuries include:
- Injuries to the ribs or back
- Internal organ damage
- Shoulder injuries
- Injuries to abdomen
The IIHS study recommends that better safety restraints and other equipment be added to automobile back seats to make them similar in safety to front-seat passengers. More people than ever, with ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, are riding passenger vehicles in lieu of public transportation or their own cars, on a daily basis. The automobiles used by the Uber or Lyft drivers contain standard seat belts. The standard passenger automobile was not designed to be used as a car service or taxi, so some of the safety mechanisms in a traditional taxi simply do not exist in a regular car.
